Leo Messi did not give explanations after the defeat of Argentina before the France of a plethoric Kylian Mbappé. The eyes were on him, in search of his resignation or a hopeful message, but the crack of Barca gave no court to the press and left the message he had to say for later. In fact, Leo Messi's plan has changed a lot of what he had in mind.

In a tragic sequence of events, Iranian footballer Sardar Azmoun has stunningly announced his international retirement after Iran failed to qualify for the knockout stage in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Aged just 23, the prolific striker has been widely hailed as the 'Iranian Messi' due to his goalscoring prowess. Azmoun, who currently plays for Russian club, FC Rubin Kazan, has represented Iran since 2014 and has scored 23 goals in just 36 games for the West Asian country.


Despite having scored 23 goals in 33 games (and 11 goals in 14 games in the qualifying stage) before the start of the competition, Azmoun failed to score a single goal at the World Cup as Iran finished 3rd in Group B - behind Portugal and Spain, after they drew against the former and lost against the latter.

As a result, the 23-year-old reportedly found himself on the receiving end of nasty insults from his own countrymen. The striker has claimed that these insults have gravely affected his mother's health, due to which he has had to hang up his boots for his national side.

Describing his decision as "painful", Azmoun said:

"My mother had overcome a serious illness and I was happy. Unfortunately, because of the unkindness of some people, and the insults that me and my team-mates in no way deserved, her illness has become severe.This has put me in a difficult position where I must pick one or the other - and as a result I pick my mother."
Notably, the prodigal striker is already 5th on Iran's list of top goalscorers and was touted to be a legend in the making, often drawing comparisons to not just Argentina and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, but also Iran's national hero Ali Daei, who scored a staggering total of 109 goals in just 149 appearances.

This will certainly represent a tragic loss to Iran's football setup as Azmoun, who debuted for the national side at the tender age of 19, was seemingly destined to become one of Iran's greatest footballers of all time.

The 25-year-old has earned a spot in the first draft of picks from Albiceleste coach Jorge Sampaoli but may not make the final 23.
Mauro Icardi has been included in Argentina's 35-man provisional squad for the 2018 World Cup.
The Inter star has been in great form in Serie A this term but has largely been frozen out of the national team, making just four appearances since his 2013 debut.
However, Jorge Sampaoli was unable to neglect the 25-year-old when it came to putting together his initial squad for the tournament .
Icardi joins fellow Serie A star Paulo Dybala, captain Lionel Messi and the injured Sergio Aguero in Sampaoli's plans.
Despite his 28-goal season in Serie A, Icardi is still expected to be cut from the team when Sampaoli narrows it down to 23.
The former Sevilla and Chile coach will name his final squad on May 13 in a press conference scheduled in Argentina's Ezeiza training complex. 
Both Icardi and Dybala have seen their chances of making the final World Cup squad cast into doubt since Sampaoli left them out of the group for the international friendlies in March.
It has been suggested Juventus star Dybala will be part of the 23-man party heading to Russia, despite his indifferent form in the latter part of the season, while Inter striker Icardi is not expected to be included.
A knee injury kept Aguero out of Manchester City's last six games of the Premier League season, but it is expected he will be fully fit for the tournament.
Zenit midfielder Matias Kranevitter and Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa have missed out on a place in the 35-man group, while there is predictably no sign of veteran Carlos Tevez.
Tevez's Boca team-mates Cristian Pavon and Pablo Perez, however, do get a call, as Sampaoli includes five Argentine Superliga names in his shortlist. 
Alongside the Xeneize pair is River Plate goalkeeper Franco Armani and Racing's Lautaro Martinez and Ricardo Centurion. 
Armani and Centurion are also among three uncapped players in the line-up, a list completed by Sporting midfielder Rodrigo Battaglia.
Argentina kick off their World Cup campaign against Iceland in Group D on June 14, before facing Croatia and Nigeria in the battle to reach the knockout stages.

The Super Eagles’ manager, Gernot Rohr, has released his 30-man provisional list for the Russia 2018 World Cup.
The list released on Monday included two surprises – Junior Lokosa, who has scored 18 goals in the Nigeria Professional Football League, and Simeon [Simy] Nwankwo, who scored five goals for Italian Serie A side, Crotone, in April.
From the angle he has operated since his tenure kicked off 21 months ago, the inclusions were a major surprise, as one thing about the former Bayern Munich defender is consistency.
However, the main question answered by Rohr’s list was the exclusion of Vincent Enyeama. There have been continuous calls that the 35-year-old be invited as he seemed the most viable option between the sticks but the counter argument has been that the Eagles should not repeat the Peter Rufai mistake of 1998.
Rohr has often stated that he is more interested in building for the future than retracing his steps. And on the issue of goalkeeping, he said he would not take an old goalkeeper to Russia to sit on the bench.

ruguay, Argentina and Colombia qualified for next year's World Cup finals following a dramatic last round of South American fixtures that also saw Peru clinch a play-off spot against New Zealand and Chile miss out completely.
Brazil were fortunate enough to escape most of the drama, having already qualified as group winners, but they still had a say in who would join them in Russia next year.
Argentina, finalists three years ago but outside the four qualifying spots going into their match in Ecuador, fell behind in the first minute but a Lionel Messi hat-trick guaranteed his side one of the three automatic berths still up for grabs.
"Luckily, we reacted quickly after Ecuador scored," Messi said after the celebrations in Quito had died down following Argentina's 3-1 win. "Thank God, we fulfilled our objective."
Uruguay also went behind at home to Bolivia, to an own goal from Gaston Silva after 24 minutes, but they forged ahead with two goals in each half to finish second in the 10-team group behind five-time World Cup winners Brazil.

Martin Caceres, Edinson Cavani and two Luis Suarez strikes gave the home side a commanding lead before Diego Godin's own goal completed the scoring in a 4-2 win for the hosts.
A second-half goal from Paolo Guerrero kept Peru in with a chance of a first World Cup appearance since 1982 when his brilliant free kick in Lima cancelled out Colombia's opener from James Rodriguez.
Peru, unbeaten in their last six qualifiers under Argentina manager Ricardo Gareca, failed to secure the win that would have ensured automatic qualification but have the consolation of a home-and-away playoff against Oceania champions New Zealand.
"To be in this position was one of our targets for the qualifiers," Gareca said after the 1-1 draw. "There's 180 minutes left. We know that it is difficult but we know that it is up to us."

Five-times champions Brazil had already qualified before their game against Chile in Sao Paulo but a 3-0 home victory saw the visitors drop from third to sixth in the standings, failing to even qualify for the inter-continental playoff.
Three second-half goals, one from Paulinho and two from Gabriel Jesus, enabled the group leaders to extend their unbeaten run in the group to 17 games.
"We finished in top spot with a great win against a strong team," Jesus said. "We were focused."
The result marks the end of a brilliant run by the Chileans, who won the last two Copa America tournaments in 2015 and 2016 and qualified for the last two World Cups.
"My soul is destroyed," Arturo Vidal, the midfield dynamo who missed the match through suspension, wrote on social media. "Thanks boys, for everything, for all these years together giving our lives in every game."

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday qualified for the 2018 World Cup holding in Russia after defeating Zambia 1-0 at a qualifier in Akwa Ibom.
Substitute Alex Iwobi got Nigeria’s goal in the 71st miniute.
The Eagles had several chances at goal but their profligacy meant they scored just a goal in front of their home fans.
